Brief description
The northern Waldviertel is known for its carp ponds. These not only produce healthy food, but are also of great ecological and social importance. The Teichfit project was launched in the district of Gmünd to serve as a model region for sustainability, climate-friendly habitats and health. The project will run for two years, during which time intensive research on carp ponds will be carried out. The project is being conducted in collaboration with scientists from WasserCluster Lunz, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, GeoSphere Austria and the University of Continuing Education Krems. The approach being pursued is that carp are, due to their diet of natural food from the ponds, particularly rich in valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to promote human health.
The individual stages of the food chain and their chemical properties can be identified and evaluated by analyzing water quality, insect diversity and their biochemical composition and the quality of the edible fish. As a second research focus, a water budget will be drawn up for the selected ponds and the region. Future scenarios for water availability will be developed, taking into account in particular the frequency and intensity of regional precipitation and temperature extremes.
