EU Water Framework Directive
The Water Framework Directive of the European Union requires that water bodies of the member states achieve a good ecological status. Fish are the decisive indicator for this. The implementation in Austria includes a sampling and assessment of the water bodies, as well as the review of measures taken. An assessment scheme was developed at the Institute and a central fish database was established.

Fish Index Austria
The EU WFD calls for a type-specific assessment of fish stocks according to five classes. In order to fulfill this requirement, the Department of Water Ecology has developed an evaluation scheme for the ecological status of fish. This Fisch Index Austria is laid down by ordinance as a national assessment scheme for Austria, with the exception of the assessment of heavily modified water bodies.

Method development
The qualitative and quantitative method of electrofishing allows a statistically secured stock calculation. Besides this, there are additional methods, which are applied in large rivers. The department of aquatic ecology strives to improve the estimation quality of the fish population surveys. For this purpose, an imaging echo sounder is also used, the DIDSON.
