The northern Waldviertel is characterized by its carp ponds, which not only produce healthy food, but are also of great ecological and social importance. The "Teichfit" project was therefore launched in the district of Gmünd to act as a model region for sustainability, climate-friendly habitats and health. Under the leadership of Martin Kainz, WasserCluster Lunz, the Waldviertel Ecological Station, BAW-IGF will be working intensively on the carp ponds over the next two years together with scientists from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, GeoSphere Austria and the University of Continuing Education Krems.
On November 28, 2023, the project kick-off event took place in the Palmenhaus Gmünd, where Christian Bauer from the Institute of Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Management, among others, gave an outlook on the investigations in the project and the existing knowledge about the positive effects of carp ponds on the region.
