Strengthening cooperation between agriculture and water management

The meeting of the representatives of the Vöcklabruck and Gmunden District Chambers of Agriculture and the Farmers' Advisory Council on September 24 and 25, 2024 at the Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Fisheries Management in Scharfling provided a valuable opportunity to discuss income opportunities in the fishing industry as well as education and training opportunities in this area. There was particular interest in the institute's projects in the field of water ecology and the effects of climate change.

Participants from the District Chamber of Agriculture and employees of the institute used the opportunity for stimulating discussions, which further promoted interdisciplinary exchange between agriculture and water management. The district of Vöcklabruck in particular, where long-standing cooperation already exists, was highlighted.

A showcase project to improve water quality, which was initiated through consultations between the Federal Office and the District Chamber of Agriculture, demonstrated the fruitful cooperation in particular. In this project, farmers receive daily weather reports and forecasts in order to plan their fertilizer application in a targeted manner and thus minimize water pollution. This initiative was developed in close cooperation with Geosphere Austria and contributes significantly to the protection of regional waters.
